Lot Essay

The present lot can be dated to the second half of the 1640s, when the influence of the artist's teacher, Daniel Seghers (1590-1661), was still clearly evident.

To date, only one other flower still life with numbered flowers is known, painted by Jacob Marell. Unlike the present painting, that work does not also depict within the composition an identifying list of the flowers. It is interesting to note that Jacob Marell was the author/illustrator of Het Tulpenboek (1637-1645); three of the numbered flowers are tracable in his book: flower no 1. Bontmantel folio 9 [IV], flower no. 2 General Gouda folio 7 [I] and no. 4 General Bol folio 11 [II].
