The Pseudo Roestraten, whose true identity is yet to be established, was so named by Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD, on the basis of the obvious stylistic affinities he shares with Pieter Gerritsz. van Roestraten. Mr. Meijer has grouped approximately 100 still lifes by the eponymous painter and/or his studio. He was active in England in the second half of the seventeenth century following in the footsteps of Roestraten who is thought to have been in the country by 1666. The work of both artists was clearly popular amongst English collectors and the latter is thought to have worked on commission for the Marquess of Lothian and Lord Clifford of Chudleigh. One of the present artist's better known works is a large still life of 1678, which was documented at Chatsworth by 1727 where it remained until sold in the Devonshire sale, in these Rooms, 27 June 1958, lot 15.
