Lot Essay

Part of a vast dinner service probably made for Justice Samuel Chase (1741-1811), Maryland delegate to the Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The armorial was borrowed from that of his aunt, Margaret Townley, and reflects the circa 1770 rococo style. A large portion of this service is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and illustrated in Chinese Export Porcelain (ex.cat.) Winter 2003
