Lot Essay

Also known as a gobelet 'à anses botte', the present cup was designed by Simon-Louis Boizot in 1781. Initially for a service commissioned by Marie Antoinette for use at her new hunting lodge and dairy at Rambouillet, the shape came into general production shortly thereafter. Given this background, the present example is amusing in its juxtaposition of royal shape with republican decoration.

See Linda H. Roth and Clare Le Corbeiller, French Eighteenth Century Porcelain at the Wadsworth Atheneum, The J. Pierpont Morgan Collection, Wadsworth Atheneum, 2000, cat. No. 119 for a discussion of the model and no. 128 for two cups and saucers also painted by Chauvaux of similar date and decorative plan to the present example, the oval panels similarly arranged and with a white-ground band edging the rims.
