Lot Essay

The source for the design of these vases is based on an engraved design for a brule-parfum by Jean Bérain published in Paris circa 1700 (illustrated in French Decorative Arts During the Reign of Louis XIV 1654-1715, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1989, p. 52).
