A LOUIS XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED AND PAINTED IVORY-INSET ROUGE GRIOTTE MARBLE MANTEL CLOCK**
Circa 1780, the dial signed Bruel à Paris, originally with a further base, putti and raised pedestals flanking the dial later replacements
The circular white enamel dial with Arabic chapter ring surmounted by a putto riding in a chariot, the dial resting on an oval plinth supported by griffons and flanked by further oval plinths surmounted by putti, all on a rectangular base mounted with painted ivory roundels depicting frolicking putti, resting on female sphynxes and spiral toupie feet, the mount to central oval plinth now mounted to the reverse, the later putti figures probably originally bisque porcelain figures
19in. (48.25cm.) high, 25½in. (64.75cm.) wide, 6in. (15.25cm.) deep

Bruel is a clockmaker recorded as working in Paris at the end of the 18th Century.

A clock of virtually identical model, having its original base and bisque porcelain figures representing La leçon d'amour and La leçon à amour flanking the dial is signed Philibert Pont St. Michel a Paris and is in the Huntington Collection, San Marino, California. (Illustrated in R. Wark, French Decorative Art in the Huntington Collection, San Marino, 1979, fig. 88.)
