Large hand-coloured engraved map on 4 sheets, the upper and lower pairs joined, fully-coloured vignettes and plans, California as an island (a few faint spots), overall dimensions 845 x 1,410mm.

This splendid and elaborately-illustrated map encompasses the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, ranging from Japan and Australia ("New Holland") to Europe, but centres on North and South America. The vibrant and highly-detailed vignettes contain a wealth of local topographical and historical information and include a view of Niagra, hunting scenes, beavers at work ("Manege et Industrie des Castors"), New World flora and fauna, medallion portraits of explorers with biographical details, a view of the Cape of Good Hope and plans of Vera-Cruz, Havana, La Conception and Mexico City. The tracks of the great early Pacific voyages are also shown, notably those of Le Maire, Magellan and Schouten. Although California is clearly depicted as an island, a note suggests doubt: "... Que quelques Modernes Croyent être attache au continent de l' Amerique par la Partie Septent." It also shows some of the early Missions established in southern Caliufornia. Leighly California as an Island plate XX; Schwartz/Ehrenberg p. 142: "... one of the most elaborately engraved maps of the Western Hemisphere ever produced ..."; Tooley California as an Island [Map Collectors' Series no. 8] 80; Tooley Mapping of America p. 130: "One of the most decorative maps of North America of the 18th-cnetury."
