FIRST EDITION, INTERMEDIATE ISSUE. Holmes 5: "The first volume contains accounts of the voyages of Byron, Wallis and Carteret. The remaining two volumes relate wholly to Cook's first voyage. As Hawkesworth says 'it was determined that the narrative should be written in the first person' (i.e. in the person of Cook) 'and that I might notwithstanding intersperse such sentiments and observations as my subject should suggest'. It was not until 1893 when the 'Corner' manuscript of Cook's Journal (now in the Mitchell Library, Sydney) was published with notes and an introduction by Captain Wharton, that a printed account of what Cook had to say about his first voyage was given to the world."
