Muscat, Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea
C. RISCH (photographer). Photograph album of H.M.S. Pelorus on the East Indies Station, June 1912 - July 1914. Oblong 2° (20 x 30cm). 87 gelatin silver-print photographs (various sizes) mounted on 31 leaves. Original red half roan, paper label with manuscript title ('H.M.S.Pelorus East Indies Station. June 1912 to July 1914.') mounted on upper cover (rubbed).
An interesting album of areas rarely photographed, during a period of direct British involvement in the affairs of Oman and the Arabian Gulf. In the period just before the first world war the Royal Navy was actively engaged in the suppression of piracy and gun-running in the Gulf. In April of 1914, however, H.M.S. Pelorus, together with H.M.S. Fox and Dartmouth, was sent to the defence of Sultan Taymur ibn-Faysal against an internal uprising which threatened even Muscat and Matrah; gunfire from these ships drove the insurgents from Barka and Quryyat, thereby delivering the first military check to the uprising. The album records many of these activities. (See R. Landen Oman since 1856, 1967, pp 394-97.)
Apart from the opening formal portrait of the officers on board, Engineer Lt. Commander Risch appears to have taken all the photographs himself. They include at least 14 at Muscat, 4 at Lingah, 4 at Bundar Abbas, 4 at Bushire (including a view of British troops marching into the town to quell a revolt), 7 at the Straits of Hormuz, 15 of a 'punitive expedition in the Persian Gulf' and 14 at Bombay. Given the private nature of the album, these images are likely to be extremely rare, if not unique.
