(Some light spotting, plate browned). Tree calf gilt by C. Kalthoeber (1782-1817) (with binder's label), gilt-rolled on board edges and turn-ins, spine tooled in gilt with neo-classical design, red morocco lettering-pieces, marbled endpapers. Provenance: Beckford sale, Sotheby's 27 November 1883, lot 2566 -- (armorial bookplate).
The second enlarged edition of Thicknesse's work, in a handsome binding by Kalthoeber. Thicknesse, Lieutenant-Governor of Landguard Fort, was a prolific author who wrote on a number of subjects, most notably on his experiences in Georgia and Jamaica and on the continent of Europe.
