Lot Essay

A panoramic view of the Tiber with the city beyond, and the single surviving stone arch of the Ponte Rotto standing proudly mid-stream in the foreground. The bridge, one of the feats of Roman engineering with its large arched supports, was built in the second century BC and suffered centuries of damage from generations of restoration as well as flooding of the Tiber, before finally collapsing in 1598. Since then only this one arch has survived. Here it is shown with some temporary additions at the base, which most likely relate to the everyday activities of mid 19th century Roman fishermen.

Girault de Prangey is known to have made four views of this subject, each in this same panoramic format. This is one of two in the archive that were made from a very similar viewpoint.
