An image of the minaret copper bark in a crescent shape - the crescent being the emblem of Byzantium and later of Islam. This little boat was placed either on top of the cupola of the ablution fountain in the mosque courtyard or midway to the top of the minaret. It was filled with grain for the birds, as a token offering. It was replaced by the crescent and the only one which is left in Cairo now tops the mausoleum of Iman Shafi, in one of the cemeteries dating back to the Ayubite dynasty.

This daguerreotype is likely to be the source for the image shown top centre of the plate reproduced on p.49.
