An extraordinary detail, given that it shows the carving of the Corinthian capital and entablature from one of the columns on the outside of the Temple of Bacchus. A comparison with the photograph in lot 63 suggests this is likely to be the second column from the left in that view, given the similarity of the cracking and the extent of the remaining entablature. If this is the case, one wonders just where the photographer was standing to achieve this view.
