Reade was a distinguished amateur scientist, a founder-member and later President of the Microscopical Society and a fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society. In April 1839, he exhibited a number of his photographs, along side those of Henry Fox Talbot, at the Royal Society.

Nearly 39 years after the discovery of Vesta, the fifth asteroid, Astræa, was discovered by Hencke in December 1845. This discovery prompted a growing interest in asteroids as a new "class" of celestial objects.
