Lot Essay

Album titles are as follows: 1. Vues Nubie. Phile. Assouan. Kom. Ombos. Edfou.; 2. Vues d'Edfou, Luscor, et Types; 3. Vues Types. Karnak. Tombeaux. Rive Gauche Ramessum; and 4. Vues Medinet Habout, Denderah, Abydos, Assiout, Pyramides.

An extensive early body of work by Beato, who is best known for his prolific work in Egypt. He had a studio in Cairo from 1862 then in 1870, moved his studio to Luxor, where he died in 1903. The presentation of these photographs - sequentially numbered and bound in consecutive volumes - suggests that the albums were compiled by Beato as a personal record containing his reference prints. The titles and numbers are presumably in his own hand or that of a member of his staff.
