This remarkably rare 2-volume set, chronicling the sites visited by Rousselet in 1865-68, is a near complete series of his plates. Due to the scarcity of his work, such a comprehensive set has not appeared at auction before. Pierre-Lin Renié, Attaché de conservation at Musée Goupil identifies the principal holdings of the artist's work as Musée Goupil, Bordeaux (153 out of 160 prints, 186 total including 33 duplicates); Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris (17 total); and the descendants of Rousselet (160 total, complete set).
The first volume, containing 77 out of 80 prints (lacking plates 1-2, 4), covers sites identified as follows: Agra, Futtehpore-Sikri, Dholepore, Gwalior, Lashkar, Duttiah, Soonaghur, Barwa Sagur, Govindgurh, Jhansie, Oorcha, Kajraha, Gharispore, Oudaya Ghiry, Sanchi, Bhopal, Bhojepore, Nursinghur, Chittore, and Aravalis. The second volume, containing 78 out of 80 prints (lacking plates 144, 156), covers Oudeypour, Ahar, Amber, Ajmeer, Pokurjee, Ulwur, Dëeg (Palace of the Bhurtpore Rajahs, illustrated), Secundra, Delhi (Colonnades of Pirthi Raj, illustrated), Togluckabad, Lucknow, Allahabad, Punnah, Nagode, Bénarès, and Sultangunge.
Majority of the images are architectural studies, including palaces, castles, temples, tombs and monuments. Also includes city views, landscapes, ruins, forts, bazaars and street scenes. Interesting portraits include Mr. Louis Rousselet in Court Dress, Bhopal; Mr. Schaumburg in Court Dress, Bhopal; The Maha Rana and the British Agent, Oudeypore; The Maha Rao Rajad Sheodan Sing, Ulwur; and The Rajah, Nagode.
