Faraut first arrived in Indochina with the French Navy in 1869 and remained there until his death in 1911. After leaving the Navy in the early 1870s, he worked for a few years for the Colonial Administration in Saigon. In 1875, he relocated to Phnom Penh and became a Royal Engineer to Norodom I, King of Cambodia (1860-1904). Between 1875 and 1881, Faraut was assigned to a number of diplomatic missions which involved the task of photographing Cambodia.

Architectural views, including several of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, rural views with figures, a few city/street scenes depicting a festival and a harbour scene are included.
