An early cyclist automaton
with papier-mâché head, fixed eyes, open mouth with four teeth, painted hair under velvet cap, fabric-covered legs and carved wood hands holding brass hammers, seated on green-painted tinplate tricycle with polychrome lacquered bell suspended above the front wheel, and red tinplate seat with three small bells, the going-barrel movement driving the back wheels and causing the figure to move her hands and feet alternately, in original cream satin bolero jacket with flared sleeves and matching skirt with black corded edging -- 10¼in. (26in.) long, (costume faded and splitting in places), probably by Théroude, circa 1860.
