A fine Roullet et Decamps 'Chaperon Rouge' automaton,
the Jumeau pressed bisque lady head with straight neck, accented closed smiling mouth, slight double chin, aquiline nose, large fixed blue paperweight eyes, arched brows, pierced ears and blonde mohair wig, with bisque shoulderplate and forearms holding a churn and butterfly net, the going-barrel movement in the body causing the figure to turn and nod her head, sweeping the butterfly net down with her right hand, the lid of the churn opening as a fur-covered dog emerges opening his mouth in barking movement, in red satin jacket over threaded cream bodice, lace choker and matching swathed skirt decorated with metal-thread braid and rosettes - 23¼in. (58cm.) high, the head with scratched-out Jumeau stamp and painter's marks HVIII, (minor wig pulls around the crown, four fingers repaired)

The expressive modelling of the head bears a strong resemblance to a rare fashionable doll produced during the early 1880s. Jumeau was the main supplier of bisque heads to the Parisian automata makers, although the standard production was of bisque bébé heads. Occasionally an individual character head would be commissioned by one of the five main automata firms (see also lot 1009), or one of the deluxe portrait heads adapted with a flat-cut (cou coupé) neck as part of a special series.

This particular mould is found on a small number of the larger Roullet et Decamps figures produced during the 1880s - a date which is also suggested by the earlier technique of pressing (rather than pouring) the bisque in the mould. Other automata with similar heads include Bergére, Magicienne, and Pifferari. 'Chaperon Rouge' appears as No. 202 in the Decamps catalogue, and at 95 Francs was one of the most expensive automata offered.
