The Exotic Bird Series, executed in 1976-1977, followed Stella's groundbreaking Polish Village and Brazilian series which allowed the artist to create three-dimensional paintings. The Exotic Bird series is more complex than the Brazilian Series, with more ornate forms and applied surfaces. Stella executed three versions of each picture: 1x, 3x (3 times larger than the first version) and 5.5x (5.5 times larger than the first version).
