Lot Essay

The frieze depicts ecstatic bacchantes escorting a staggering Silenus. Discovered in the late 16th century, the vase was in the Borghese family's collection by 1645. It was brought from Prince Camillo Borghese in 1807 by his brother-in-law Napoleon Bonaparte and together with the Medici Vase is regarded as the most famous vase in antiquity. It is now in the Louvre.
