Lot Essay
The 'Roman lamp' vase, crowned by Minerva's owl, is formed as a reed-enriched shell with the deity's 'draco' handle and 'Venus' dolphin spout. Its altar pedestal is enriched with tablets of mer-figures riding mythical chimera. A related vase in the Mario Praz collection is also signed by Benedetto Boschetti (d.c.1870), who established his celebrated Rome workshops in 1820 and was a contributor to the London 1851 Exhibition. ( A. Gonzales-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, Roma e il Regno delle Due Sicilie, Milan, 1984, vol 11, fig 287).
