Lot Essay

Louis-Claude Vassé was one of the most gifted sculptors in France in the reign of Louis XV and was an influential master to such artists as Martin-Claude Monot (d.1803) and Félix Lecomte (d.1817). The present terracotta reflects his blend of rococo and neo-classicism, and can be compared in body type and pose to the two putti on the Monument for the Heart of Marie Leczinska in Notre Dame de Bon Secours, Nancy.
