Born in the Hague in 1675, Johann van der Hagen is said to have come to London around the end of the 17^th Century. He was greatly influenced by Willem van de Velde the Younger, and the two families were linked by the marriage of Johann's daughter Barnarda to van de Velde's son Cornelis.
