Rigged as a brigantine, the steel screw steamer Rex was built at Leith by Ramage & Ferguson in 1889. Ordered by the Realm Steamship Company (R. Conaway & Co., managers), she was registered in Liverpool at 1,750 tons gross and measured 265 feet in length with a 36½ foot beam. Within ten years however, her owners had gone out of business and Rex herself was sold to new owners (unknown) and presumably renamed.
