NELSON'S LAST MOMENTS REPORTED BY THE CREW OF THE VICTORY
when Lord Nelson received the fatal ball, he fell on the deck. Capt Hardy ran to him and said, I hope it is not mortal, My Lord. He replied, They have caught me at last. He was then taken below by Mr Burke, Purser of the Victory, who carried him in his arms and laid him on a bed. His Lordship said, Burke my back is broke. The surgeon (Mr Beatie) soon came and examined the wound. He said, Doctor you can be of no use to me; leave me, and go to assist those to who you can be of service, as I have but a few moments to live.... Also, an interesting anecdote: As the Victory was going into action Nelson cried out, 'This is the happiest day of my life - and it is a happy day too at Burnham Thorpe (the place of his nativity) this is the day of their fair.' (Back page col 1 15cm. of column space) in a complete issue of THE NORWICH MERCURY dated 21 December 1805.
