Lot Essay

Whilst professional oarsmen competed for a purse of money, amatures were presented with silverware. William Edwards, generally regarded as one of Australias finest gold and silversmiths, was born in England in 1819 and arrived in Australia in 1857, ceasing production around 1870. He produced a number of trophies for various sporting events and was generally retailed through Walsh & Sons.
