possibly 17^th century, the wooden box heavily banded with iron, hinged document divider inside, the right panel removable with secret drawer behind, drop handles (lock removed, old wear) -- 14 x 19½in. (35.5 x 49.5cm.)

Lot Essay

Although this type of chest was used over a long period of time, it is strikingly similar to one recovered intact from the Swedish warship Vasa of 1629, in which were also found the hat, gloves, shirt and other items a 17^th century sailor might be expected to use.
