The steel single screw steamer Tantallon Castle was built by Fairfield Shipping, Glasgow for the Castle Line in 1894. She had a length of 440ft 3in., breath 50ft 6in., and gross tonnage of 5,636 tons. Powered by quadruple expansion steam engine producing 1,229 horsepower, the Tantallon Castle could reach a maximum speed of 17.3 knots.

In 1895, the Tantallon Castle made her way across the North Sea to celebrate the opening of the Kiel Canal by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Her guests included Mr. and Mrs. Gladstone, and a brief visit from the Danish Royal family when she docked in Copenhagen. Her fortune fatally changed however in 1901 when she ran aground in dense fog on Robben island, Table Bay. Despite the efforts of her three sister ships -- the Braemar Castle, Avondale Castle and Raglan Castle -- she stuck fast and, within weeks, was broken in two and smashed to pieces in a violent storm.
