Arthur Wardle executed portraits of dogs to be reproduced on cigarette cards for both John Player and Sons and Wills' Cigarettes. The present pair of portraits would appear to relate to the series of Dogs' Heads executed for John Player and Son in 1929. He also executed a series of full-bodied dog portraits for Players in 1931.
