Following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 Mary Hughes was appointed lady-in-waiting to Princess Marie Louise of Schleswig-Holstein, Queen Victoria's granddaughter, in March 1902. Thence by family descent.

A gold and coral bracelet presented by the Duchess of Kent to her daughter, Queen Victoria on her fortieth birthday,
the square box links with dished fronts alternately set with pink coral beads and gold beads, the reverse with inscriptions over four links detailing the history of the bracelet, the centre links From Mama 24th May 1859 flanked to the left by Present from the Duchess of Kent to Queen Victoria and to the right by Given to Mary Hughes as a souvenir of Her Majesty Jan 22 1901. Mary Hughes was presented with the bracelet on the day of Queen Victoria's death. The bracelet is housed in its original fitted case, the lining gilt stamped Edward Tessier 26 New Bond St. London W.
