Lot Essay

This newly discovered painting can be dated around 1907-1908. In composition and technical appearance it is closely related to Mondriaan's well known painting The red cloud (Gemeente Museum, The Hague)
From 1906 until 1908 Mondriaan painted several similar settings located near Hengelo. Although it has never been possible for Robert Welsh to define the exact location, it seems very likely that both works can be situated in Twente. For The red cloud Welsh stated: 'The rounding of the meadow, the open space and the indication of rows of trees along the horizon so typical of Twente and untypical of other regions in which Mondriaan worked. It is impossible not to consider this painting as an evocation of essential features of the area, no matter however abstracted' (R. Welsh, Piet Mondrian, Catalogue Raisonné of the Naturalistic Works, Blaricum 1998, p.384)
