LATOUR
Christie's have been selling the great wines of Château Latour since 1792 when its name first appeared in a catalogue, then on offer was a "hamper containing 50 quart bottles of the growths of Latour vintage 1785". So what makes Latour so special, one thing that I was interested to learn recently is their method of vine replacement. As we know most producers replant their vines when they reach the age of around 50 -70 years, Latour however use a method called jardinage where each vine is left in the vineyard until it stops producing fruit. This gives Latour by far and away the oldest vines in the Médoc and is definitely a contributing factor towards the wines great power and consistency.
Château Latour--Vintage 1964
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Levels: one bottom neck, two very top, four top and one upper/top shoulder, bin-soiled and stained labels
Showing beautifully. Still with good color, mature and very clean. A classic Pauillac nose, muscular yet soft and refined, hints of ripe currant. Dry, leathery, and full bodied; showing rich warm currants, perfect weight. Excellent length. A great drinking wine. Ready now and over the next 5 years. Mar 2002 DW
