Lot Essay

In 1876, Tiffany & Co. displayed a five-piece tea and coffee serivce matching this pattern, at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. A contemporary newspaper commented the service was "the most wonderful specimen of repousse work in Tiffany's exhibit, ... Persian in outline, with the flowers and foliage so beautifully brought out, that a botanist could classify every leaf and flower." The article further noted a service in the same style was on sale in the New York store for the enormous sum of $3,000. Magnificent Tiffany Silver, John Loring, 2001, page 145.
