Lot Essay

Of the small group of recorded chests by this decorator, the few inscribed with the owner's name and date suggest that the artist was working in the Lykiens Valley close to Bethel Township, Dauphin (now Lebanon) County. The format and color pallet, which includes red, white, blue and both glossy and matt black is consistant in each example. For a further discussion and similar examples see Monroe H. Fabian, The Pennsylvania German Decorated Chest, (New York, 1978) p. 170, figs. 169 and 238. For another related example see Sotheby's New York, January 17, 2002, lot 419.
