Lot Essay

This rare sofa is one of a small group that likely represents the work of the carver Samuel Field McIntire working in the Classical manner. While Federal sofas with the distinctive carving depicting woven baskets and trailing grape vines in high-relief are well known, only a few Classical examples with sabre legs and boldly scrolled arms have come to light. These include Sack, American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, Vol. 4 p. 995; The Magazine Antiques May, 1972, p. 785; Winterthur Museum DAPC Collection, Acc. No. 66.787; and Christie's, New York, January 24, 1987, lot 269.
