Oval box, the cover, base and four side panels enamelled with translucent emerald-green on an engine-turned ground engraved with a moiré pattern of wavy reeding forming vertical waves, the cover centred with an oval Petitot-revival enamel miniature depicting a young lady called Madame de Montespan facing left in low-cut sand-coloured dress with white lace underslip, her brown hair tied in long ringlets in the Louis XIV fashion, within a gold mount (formerly hinged to pop open with a secret mechanism) with pierced foliate border and ribbon-tie surmount, the frosted gold borders chased in two-colour gold with trailing foliate scrolls encircling concave pellets, pierced festoon outer borders, the base furthermore decorated with two gold arches at the left and right ends chased with rosebud rows framed by flutes; the four side pilasters with scrolling ends and hung with laurel swags
