oval, 2½ in. (64 mm.) high, silver-gilt frame, the reverse with central lock of hair, seed pearls and gold wire within blue glass surround, the outer border engraved 'JAMES DANIELL ESQUIRE. FORMERLY GOVERNOR OF MASULIPATAM. ELDEST SON OF JAMES DANIELL ESQUIRE OF CANTERBURY AND JANE HIS WIFE. BORN 1744. DIED 1802'

Lot Essay

James Daniell, son of James Daniell (1707-1758) and his wife, Jane Mantell (d. 1788), married Lucy Butler (d. 1846), second daughter of Peregrine Butler of Dungarvan, Ireland. They had issue.
James Daniell held a seat on the Governor Generals Council and controlled the District of Masulipatatium. He is buried in St. Paul's, Canterbury.
The second version of the present miniature mentioned in Crosse's fee book was in the Dyson Perrins collection, sold Sotheby's, London, 11 December 1958, lot 29.
