Lot Essay

Pierre Marie François de Sales Baillot, French violinist and composer. After studies in France and in Rome, he was presented in 1791 to Viotti who engaged him for the orchestra of the Feydeau theatre. Baillot continued his studies at the Conservatoire of Paris under Reicha and Cherubini and became a professor himself in 1795. He was successively solo violinist to Emperor Napoleon, of the Paris opera, and to Kings Charles X and Louis-Philippe. He was the author of a famous treatise and method L'Art du violon of 1834.
