Lot Essay

Having successfully served in the Turkish campaign of 1770/1771, Platov was named by Tsar Alexander I of Russia 'Hetman of the Cossacks of the Don'. He fought against the French 1805-1807 and hung on their retreat from Moscow with pitiless pertinacity. He was notorious for the devastations of his hordes of semi-savages.
