AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED NECK-AMPHORA
Attributed to the Edinburgh Painter, Circa 500 B.C.
One side with the "Departure of Triptolemos," the youthful Eleusinian prince seated in his winged chariot with his head turned back, wearing a long white robe, holding three sheaths of wheat in his left hand and a scepter in his right; the other side with the "Reclamation of Helen," her husband Menelaos walking to the right but looking back at Helen, who he grips by the wrist, the hero armed in a crested Corinthian helmet, cuirass over a short chiton, greaves and a sword suspended from a baldric over his right shoulder, with two spears over his left shoulder, Helen wearing a patterned chiton and a himation over her left shoulder and right arm, a red fillet in her hair; both scenes on a groundline, with a dotted band below, rays above the foot, tongues on the shoulders, three palmettes on the neck, a lotus bud and palmette complex below the reeded handles
