A ROMAN SILVER BOWL
Circa 1st Century A.D.
The lentoid vessel with inward-curving shoulders and a ring foot, the shoulders with a figural frieze enclosed above and below by beading, the frieze in four zones, one zone with an archer in a short tunic and billowing mantle taking aim at a charging leopard, its spots in niello, his dog lying dead before him, a second leopard to the right with its head turned back, one zone with two dogs in pursuit of a stag, a hunter with a short spear following from the right wearing a short tunic, one zone with a bear eating fruit off the ground, with a second bear raised on its hind legs to pick fruit from a tree, and one zone with a hunter in a short tunic preparing to spear a charging lion, a dog's head on the ground to the left, and a dog and lion battling to the right, a band of Lesbian kymation below, the lower portion of the vessel with elegant scrolling framing rosettes, details throughout highlighted by gilding, a punched inscription on the underside in Greek, reading \KLRKQN\k
