A CAUCASIAN NOMADIC GILT BRONZE FINIAL
Circa 10th Century A.D.
Composed of a cast finial in the form of a stylized woman holding a hemispherical bowl before her in her hands, wearing a pendant cross between her small breasts, her face with a pointed chin, thin mouth, and a straight nose that merges with prominent brows, the eyes inlaid in turquoise glass (one missing), the ears pierced for now-missing earrings, a fringe of striated hair at the top of the head, the back open, the finial riveted to a domed sheet ornamented with an interlocking pattern, the background stippled, with four glass disks in ribbed collar settings interspersed with rivets which attach leather to the underside; together with a gilt bronze openwork fitting, the ribbed frame enclosing a bearded man with outstretched arms wearing a pendant cross, pinned to a glass-set ribbed collar above, perhaps one similarly pinned below; and a small gilt bronze bell
