Lot Essay

This watercolour is one of two preparatory works that Roberts produced for a large canvas entitled, The Cockneys, painted circa 1919. Although this work was given to fellow painter, Eric Kennington, at a later date he returned it to Roberts who subsequently destroyed it.

The other preparatory work is a red chalk drawing, exhibited at the Redfern Gallery, London, June 1966 (sold Sotheby's, London, 7 November 1990, lot 46).
