Discussing his sculpture in 1962, the artist (Reg Butler Recent Sculpture, Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York, exhibition catalogue) commented, 'To oversimplify I could say that all my life I have only been concerned with four sculptures: a girl figure - usually standing, a man - usually small headed, usually doing something, a kite figure - 'figure in space', St. Catherine (associated very often with a wheel) and boxes'.
