Freddy Mayor, founder of the Mayor Gallery, gave Paolozzi his first one-man show in 1947 while he was still a student at the Slade. The exhibition included sculptures of birds, fish and animals in plaster, concrete and bone. The works, which included sculptures of bulls and bulls' heads, show the influence of Picasso but also evince an interest in the writings of Ernest Hemingway (see F. Pearson, Paolozzi, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, 1999, p. 18).
