'A group of stoneware book shapes were made in the studio of Hans Spinner in Grasse and these were brought to Caro's London studio ... It is interesting to consider that Caro has made these book sculptures during the era when the very physicality of the book's existence as an object is now threatened to be superseded by the Internet and World Wide Web. These sculptures could be seen as monuments to 'The Book' as an archetypal form. Perhaps it is due to the very familiarity of the book shape to all of us that these sculptures are among the most seductive Caro has created in recent years' (see Anthony Caro New Sculptures a survey, op. cit., p. 43).
