8° (153 x 96mm). Italic and roman types. Woodcut author portrait on title, 3 full-page woodcut genealogical diagrams of the Visconti, Gonzaga, and d'Este families, woodcut historiated initials. (Faint dampstain at lower corner.)
BINDING: Parisian gold-tooled olive morocco over thin pasteboard of c. 1555, BOUND FOR THOMAS MAHIEU BY THE 'MAHIEU AESOP BINDER', the sides with interlacing strapwork lozenge and rectangle and, at centre, a 'Chinese peach', decorated with hatched and open tools, title and author's name lettered in central compartment of front cover, ownership formula 'THO. MAIOLI. .ET . AMICORUM.' at foot, Mahieu's motto 'Inimici mei mea michi non me michi' lettered in centre of back cover, spine with raised bands, single-line frame to each compartment, second compartment lettered with author and title, others with single tool at centre over-stamped by Pétau's monogram [Olivier 2290, fer 3], green headbands, single fillet at board edges, single blind fillet on turn-ins, gilt edges, original endpapers without watermark (very slight rubbing at band ends, very faint darkening at lower corner of back cover); preserved in modern plexiglass slipcase. Reproduced in Bulletin Morgand, V, 1889, no. 17795, and cited by Hobson Maioli p. 103, no. 75.

VERY FINE BINDING IN ORIGINAL CONDITION FOR THOMAS MAHIEU. It belongs to Hobson's group I, all of which (except no. 29, cf. Foot p.188) were executed by the Mahieu Aesop binder. This binder also worked for Mahieu's friend, fellow bibliophile, and previous Treasurer of France, Jean Grolier. A twin of the present binding, covering a 1502 Aldine Catullus, survives at Trinity College Dublin (Hobson no. 27). See G.D. Hobson, Maioli, Carnevari, and others, London: 1926; H.
