Lot Essay

The late Professor Julius S. Held confirmed the attribution to Antoine Sallaert and had intended to publish the painting (written communication, 27 July 1977).

The present composition is a preparatory sketch for the painting in the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts, Brussels. That painting was originally executed as an altarpiece for the Church of Notre-Dame de la Chapelle in Brussels.
