Lot Essay

This work was commissioned in 1942 by Mr. Nat W. McKelvey. Mr. McKelvey writes of Maynard Dixon and this work in a Notorized Statement dated April 26, 1985 that accompanies the lot: "My mother, the late Eleanor W. McKelvey, held a mortgage on Dixon's studio, and it was through this connection that I met Maynard Dixon. I had lived in Mexico and wanted a painting of a Charro in full costume and Dixon agreed to paint one for me."
